This is a poster project that I completed while taking the SFU IAT102 course at FIC. Influenced by the forward-thinking design philosophy of 横尾忠則さん (Tadanori Yokoo), I designed this reinterpretation poster for the anime “となりのトトロ” (My Neighbor Totoro) .

For this project, I borrowed key design elements from three of Tadanori Yokoo’s classic works, which are shown on the second page of the PDF below. These include his iconic central radial lines and his “3D in 2D” typographic style. In many of his works, the hand-painted areas appear flat, without shadow rendering, and there is no clear boundary between light and dark. Therefore, this style is difficult to achieve efficiently using advanced features in software such as Adobe Illustrator. As a result, all elements were produced in Adobe Illustrator, with the hand-rendered parts created manually rather than through advanced automated tools.
The anime I based this poster on comes from a similar era as the designer’s works, and they share a comparable visual style. People usually call it “昭和レトロ (Showa Retro Style)” (usually indicates artworks from 1926-1989 in Japan). So, I will use High Contrast but relatively dull color combinations. It is necessary to highlight the traces caused by the erosion of time.
